“Worn and torn” nappies

Natural fiber inserts and fitted nappies degrade with washing and wearing. Let’s reframe this as “battle scars” of our cloth nappy journey.

Fitted nappies, with large amount of wear and holes.

We asked experienced members of our community to share their experiences using cloth nappies. This series covers childcare, travel, returning to work and more.

Clean Cloth Nappies member Aurelia showcases some of her “battle-scarred” cotton prefolds and fitted nappies.

When my diapers first started showing signs of wear and tear from prolonged use, it bummed me out. I instinctively thought, “Oh no, my wash routine must have been crap!” Then I quickly realized this was just normal degradation of fabric.

The wear is most advanced in my pure cotton prefolds and fitteds. Bamboo blends are next, with their balding. Unsurprisingly, the microfiber inserts and microfleece liners of the pocket nappies still look pristine. That’s the difference between natural and synthetic fibers!

The fitteds in the photos are secondhand to begin with, and were probably not washed very well by the first owner. I’ve also been using them as night nappies (boosted) for about two years. They see a lot of heavy-duty pee action! 😅 Nonetheless, there’s still lots of life left in them.

These days, I see the holes and frays as “battle scars” of our cloth nappy journey, even if the perfectionist in me still wants all of them to stay pristine forever lol. 😄
