Dryers are a laundry lifesaver, and most of us have one. In our recent State of laundry survey, 72.5% of respondents stated that they had a dryer in their home, and 65% used it at least once a week.

Many members shared concerns that regular dryer use would use a significant amount of electricity, shrink clothing and accelerate wear and tear. This can certainly be true with older-style vented dryers. However, newer technology, such as heat pump dryers, has been gaining attention for their energy savings, gentler care on clothes, and improved safety. But what do these differences really mean for normal households?

We sat down with Kye, former Category Manager at Bosch, to talk about the benefits of heat pump technology and what sets these machines apart. He’s a self-confessed nerd when it comes to laundry appliances, so we’re very excited to hear his thoughts on this.

The Q&A

💭 What makes a heat pump dryer different from the other types of dryers people might already know about?

A heat pump dryer uses a closed-loop heat exchange system that reheats and recycles warm air instead of venting it outside. Essentially, they reuse the warm air they create instead of wasting it. That means it’s gentler on clothes and saves energy.

💭 What are some key benefits of a heat pump dryer compared to other types of dryers?

  • Cuts your power bill (up to half the energy of a regular dryer)
  • Kinder on fabrics – less shrinkage and fading
  • No vent needed, so you can put it almost anywhere

💭 What kinds of households are heat pump dryers perfect for?

  • Families who do loads of washing
  • Apartment living (no venting issues)
  • Anyone who wants to save money and protect clothes

💭 Some people worry that heat pump dryers take longer. How does the drying time compare to a regular dryer?

Heat pump dryers can take slightly longer than vented dryers because they dry at lower fabric-friendly temperatures.

New models are much faster than older ones, and modern models include sensor technology that optimises cycle time. This means they often deliver drying results similar to traditional dryers, with added fabric protection.

The trade-off is lower bills and clothes that last longer.

💭 Dryer fires are a concern for many households. Are heat pump dryers a safer option?

Yes – they dry at lower temperatures, which means less risk of overheating or fires.

💭 Do heat pump dryers need any special care or maintenance that people should know about?

They require simple, regular maintenance:

  1. Empty the lint filter after each cycle.
  2. Occasionally, clean the heat exchanger and condenser filter (on some models). Bosch have a self-cleaning function on selected models, which takes this work away.
  3. Empty the water tank, unless connected to a drain hose.

Super Easy!

💭 What’s the biggest myth or misunderstanding you hear about heat pump dryers?

The most common myth is that they take much longer to dry items. In reality, while earlier models were slower, today heat pump dryers use smart sensors and optimised airflow to deliver drying times very close to traditional dryers, with added energy savings and fabric care.

💭 How has Bosch designed its heat pump dryers to suit Australian homes and lifestyles?

  • Big drums for family loads
  • Quick cycles for school uniforms and sports gear
  • Energy savings for high power bills
  • Quiet for open plan living

💭 Looking ahead, how do you see dryers changing in the next few years?

Dryers will continue to become more energy efficient. Think: faster, smarter, quieter, and even more eco-friendly. Heat pump tech will soon be the new normal.

Not just hot air

Heat pump dryers might feel like a new technology, but they’re quickly becoming the smart choice for families who want to save money, protect their clothes, and dry laundry more safely. Our State of laundry survey agrees as well: 44.8% of dryer owners have a heat pump dryer, compared to 39.7% for traditional vented dryers. The tide is already changing. 🌊

Special thanks to Bosch for helping us unpack the benefits and clear up some common myths of heat pump dryers. We hope this makes it easier to decide if a heat pump dryer is right for your home the next time you’re on the market for a new dryer!
